The region of the unique city of Zadar was inhabited as early as the 9th century BC. It underwent great urbanization in Roman times and has been inhabited ever since. The ancient layout of the streets on the peninsula has been retained, as well as the Roman forum dating back from the 1st century. The landmark of the city is the pre-Romanesque St Donat Church from the 9th century, together with the finest specimen of the Romanesque in Croatia: St Anastasia Cathedral (13th century), St Grisogogno (Krševan) from the 12th century and St Mary’s Bell Tower from 1105. Today, Zadar is the cultural, economic and administrative centre of northern Dalmatia, which will surely captivate you with its charm and hospitality.
